Some games are so ingrained in popular culture that people never stop to think about how they came to be. Billiards is one of those games.

Many of us grew up with a pool hall down the street and a table in our neighbor’s basement. You might have a relative who loves to play billiards, and you’ve probably seen the game depicted in various forms of media. Consequently, you may have never questioned where it came from.

When Was Pool Invented?

Believe it or not, the history of pool extends back to 14th-century France.

In its original form, billiards didn’t involve cues. Instead, a mace was used to push the balls toward their destinations. The Rules of the Game

If you asked people how to play air hockey, they’d most likely give a lot of similar answers, only with slight variations in the rules. That’s because most people just play it for fun and go by their rulebook, which is fine, but if you’re looking to become a real table hockey ace, you need to know the official rules.

Possession

To start the game, you’ll need to determine possession. You can do this by simply flipping a coin. Whoever wins gets first possession. After the end of each round, the first possession goes to the player who did not have it in the previous round.

Your possession ends when the puck crosses the centerline, meaning you cannot reach past the line for the puck once it has crossed. You’re also not allowed to touch the puck with the striker or mallet, which is the air hockey version of a hockey stick.

One last possession rule: you may only call timeout if you are in possession of the puck or the puck is out of bounds. You get one 10-second timeout per round.

Scoring

To score a point, you must hit the puck into the opponent’s goal without your striker crossing the centerline, and the puck must enter the goal fully. If it enters and then ricochets back out or gets stuck halfway in the goal, it is not a point.

You cannot place your striker on top of the puck to hold it in place. This is called topping and will definitely get you scolded in a serious competition.

Rounds go up to seven points. The first player to seven wins the round. The best of seven rounds is the winner.

Hitting the Puck

The initial impulse with table hockey is to smash the puck as hard as possible toward the opponent’s goal. While this is certainly fun, it’s not very effective. You want to hit the puck from behind at all times. When you don’t hit from behind, you’re much more likely to get an awkward rebound that may wind up in your own goal.

Keep It Simple

Another impulse is to misdirect the opponent with a double-bank shot, but that slows down the puck and gives your opponent a better shot at blocking it. You want a good clean shot that banks no more than one time.

Shuffleboard Rules and Scoring Explained

Unlike traditional shuffleboard, shuffleboard table rules don't include the use of curved sticks, and it doesn't involve opposing players standing at opposite ends of the playing field. Don't worry. If you're unfamiliar with shuffleboard rules or scoring, you will soon be!

Standard Table Shuffleboard Rules

If you want to keep up with the veterans of the game, you'll need to learn the standard shuffleboard table rules.

To get started, you'll need a shuffleboard table and four weights (also called pucks), two for each player (eight in total). The weights are colored to distinguish them — four red and four blue.

After flipping a coin to decide who goes first, you'll take turns sliding the weights down the table without them falling off the end. Different marked sections indicate how many points each player scores when their weight stops, with the weight at the farthest end of the board being worth the most points.

In table shuffleboard, players not only try to get their weights into the highest scoring zones possible but also attempt to prevent their opponents from scoring. To this end, players can also knock their opponents' weights off the board.

Shuffleboard Scoring Rules

A conventional table shuffleboard surface has three numbered sections marked off in ascending order away from the players. The numbers correspond to how many points a player receives when they land their weight in that section. If players push their weight off the table, they receive no points. Beyond section 3 is a drop-off.

Only the most distant weights in each section are worth points. For instance, if Player 1 gets a weight in section 2, but Player 2 gets their weight farther in the same unit, only Player 2 would be awarded points for the turn. Most shuffleboard scoring rulesets dictate that play continues until one player reaches 15 or 21 points.

Knock-Off Shuffleboard

In this classic twist on shuffleboard table rules, players throw from opposite ends of the board, aiming to get as close as possible to the foul line while also attempting to knock their opponent's weights off the table. The first team to reach 15 points in Knock-Off wins, though the game allows players to continue to 21 points if they choose to.

Crazy Eight

Crazy Eight is a variation of Knock-Off that allows each player to use all eight weights. Player 1 begins by throwing four weights of the same color. If they manage to keep them all on the board without passing the foul line, no points are scored, and it's Player 2's turn to throw from the opposite end of the board.

However, if Player 1 manages to get their first four weights across the foul line without going over the edge, they then get to throw the other four weights at the first set. Their goal is to knock off the weights of the first color while keeping at least one of the fresh weights on the table. Players should agree on a winning score beforehand (typically, 15 or 21), and the first to meet or exceed that number wins.

Horse Collar

Snooker vs. Pool: Major Differences

At first glance, snooker and pool appear essentially the same, and you may not even notice they are different tables.

But just because these sports look alike doesn’t mean the games are interchangeable. There are several major ways snooker and pool make for very different games.

Snooker vs. Pool History

The name “pool” comes from the pool of money that the players had bet on the race. As for snooker, the game was developed by European nobility who needed an indoor game to play when inclement weather interrupted outdoor polo rounds and other sports.

Snooker is played mainly by the British, while Americans prefer a game of pool.

The Table

Snooker table vs. pool table size is another important distinction. Many public pool hall and bar pool tables are 3.5’ by 7’, home pool tables are 4’ by 8,’ and professional tournament tables are 4.5’ by 9’.

Snooker tables are 5’ by 10’ for American versions and 6’ by 12’ for the European variety. Snooker tables are also lower than pool tables.

Both tables have six pockets, and the felt of each table is very similar. But snooker pockets are smaller, equal in size, and feature curved pocket leads. On pool tables, the side pockets are larger than the corner pockets.

Another disparity between a snooker table vs. a pool table is the markings. Pool tables have head and foot markings to show where the top ball in the rack is supposed to be placed. Snooker tables have a D and baulk line to mark the bottom.

The Balls

In a pool table game, there are 16 balls, including 15 numbered and colored balls and 1 white cue ball. Pool balls use solid colors for balls 1 through 8 and stripes for balls 9 through 15. Pool balls are 2 ¼“ in diameter and weigh around 6 ounces.

Snooker balls are smaller, measuring at 2 ⅙” in diameter. There are 22 snooker balls total, including a white cue ball, 15 red balls, and six balls in yellow, green, brown, blue, pink, and black.

The Cues

Snooker vs. pool cues differs mainly in weight. Snooker cues weigh anywhere from 16 to 18 ounces, with heavier cues generally being used to break. Pool cues are heavier and weigh between 18 and 21 ounces, increasing in half-ounce stages.

As for length, snooker cues and pool cues are about the same. Modern pool cues are 58” long, and snooker cues are 59” long.

The Rules

The rules of these two games are drastically different.

Pool Rules

For a game of 8-ball in pool, the players first use the rack to put the numbered/colored balls in formation. The 8-ball is always in the center. The white cue ball is placed at the opposite end of the table, and a player “breaks” by striking the cue ball into the colored balls.

If the player sinks a solid-colored pool ball, that player must use the cue ball to hit all the solid-colored balls into the pockets (except the 8-ball). Players take another turn every time they pocket one of their balls. If the player hits an opponent’s ball into a pocket or fails to score with their own balls, it becomes the other player’s turn.

Once a player has pocketed all their balls, they must pocket the black 8-ball to win the game.

Snooker Rules

Snooker is more complicated than pool. The racked red balls are placed just behind the foot spot. Then, the pink ball is placed just ahead of the red balls, and the black ball just behind them.

At the other end of the table, you’ll place the cue ball at the top of the D, with the yellow ball on the left side where the D intersects with the baulk line and the green on the right where the D and baulk line meet. The blue ball goes in the center of the table.

One player breaks and each player takes turns pocketing balls. They must alternate between hitting a red ball and a colored ball. Each red ball is worth one point, while the other colors increase in value:

Yellow: 2 points
Green: 3 points
Brown: 4 points
Blue: 5 points
Pink: 6 points
Black: 7 points

While the red balls remain pocketed, after the colored balls are sunk, they are returned to the table to remain in play. Each game of snooker is played to a pre-set amount of points.
